Worlds >

A section to catalogue all my settings for use in writing stories.

Update 02/03/24: As you can imagine, there's still a lot of work to do in this section. The links to individual world pages do not work yet, but I am putting them in as placeholders for now.

The ultimate idea is that the sidebar will have two navigation sections: the first allowing one to navigate between different world pages, and the second being a subsection of that particular world, which will have stuff like 'politics' and 'map' and so on. These distinctions will be mostly for my personal reference, I'll be quite frank.

For now, enjoy the world drafts below.

  • Okay here's the plan. The 'Worlds' section is for our different settings, because I find I need grounded worldbuilding to springboard any kind of story. As such, I reckon it would make sense to have different settings for different genres! Sci-fi, fantasy, superhero, post-apocalyptic, supernatural/gothic... that's all I have right now. Oh wait, no, dinosaurs. Something like Ark. I fucking love dinosaurs.
  • How about seven, named after the days of the week? Mond, Whitsun (Whitsun's Day), Wedden, Donstag (Donnerstag), Vrij (Vrijdag), Saturn, Sunder. Sunder would maybe be post-apocalyptic because it sounds violent. Wedden feels like a fairy nest! So that can be its own seperate fairy setting. Saturn can be literally the planet, and that's our sci-fi setting sorted. What's left? Donstag sounds gothic, so that can be the vampire one. Vrij sounds sufficiently prehistoric, that can be dinosaurs. Mond is french for world, which fits a fantasy setting best. And that leaves Whitsun with a superhero setting - we might make it a city, though: and change it to Witsunburg.

"The Mond"

Day of the week: Monday.  //  "Monday's child is fair of face"

Genre: CLASSICAL FANTASY  //  "Wizards, dragons and knights, oh my!"

Colour: Red.

Main premise: Here is where I'd put the main premise of this particular fantasy world, if I had one! Stuff to distinguish it from other stuff in the same genre. Usually something geographical is fine - for example, 'a disc-shaped world flying through space on the back of a giant turtle'.

Notes:

  • Sin: Pride, probably? Subject to change.
  • Element: Water, ditto above.

The Acual Planet Saturn

Day of the week: Saturday.  //  "Saturday's child works hard for a living."

Genre: SCIENCE FICTION  //  "Space, aliens, and highly advanced technology."

Colour: Orange.

Main premise: In some way or another, this science fiction setting will revolve around the actual planet Saturn, from our solar system. I don't know how yet, but it's a great place to start.

Notes:

  • Sin: Sloth is ironic, given the nursery rhyme for Saturdays.
  • Element: Light. Electricity is lightning, in a way.

Sunder

Day of the week: Sunday.  //  "Child born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, good and gay."

Genre: POST-APOCALYPTIC  //  "A harsh landscape, scavenged tech, the rebuilding of society."

Colour: Yellow.

Main premise: In this particular genre, the premise is usually the 'how' of the world ending, as that drives all struggles afterwards.

Notes:

  • Sin: Lust is ironic for a Sunday.
  • Element: Earth feels right.

"Witsunburg"

Day of the week: Tuesday.  //  "Tuesday's child is full of grace".

Genre: MUTANTS / SUPERHERO NOIR  //  "Hidden powers, heroes and villians, secret identities."

Colour: Green.

Main premise: Here is where I'd put the main premise of this particular superhero world, if I had one! Stuff to distinguish it from other stuff in the same genre. In this case, it's usually to do with the source of the mutations or powers.

Notes:

  • Sin: Wrath, probably? Subject to change.
  • Element: Air.
  • Marvel was good at one point. It's easy to forget that, but it was good at one point.

"The Vrij"

Day of the week: Friday.  //  "Friday's child is loving and giving".

Genre: HISTORICAL FANTASY (DINOSAURS)  //

Colour: Blue.

Main premise: Okay, my main concept here is a Dinotopia-like alternate universe, where history diverges from our own world in a fantastical way. Perhaps the meteor was small enough to not cause a mass extinction, perhaps time ruptures at the moment of the meteor landing, scrambling geography for a thousand years either side of the impact. I haven't decided yet if these fantastic elements will include magic or not, but at the moment I don't think so. I just really want a Dinotopia kind of world, focusing on historically accurate depictions of how humanity has lived through the ages.

Notes:

  • Sin: Greed, probably? Subject to change.
  • Element: Fire.

"Donstag"

Day of the week: Thursday.  //  "Thurday's child has far to go".

Genre: GOTHIC / SUPERNATURAL / ELDRITCH  //  "Vampires, ghosts, ghouls, and all things unspeakable."

Colour: Indigo.

Main premise: Here is where I'd put the main premise of this particular world, if I had one!

Notes:

  • Sin: Envy, probably? Subject to change.
  • Element: Shadow... yes that's an element... definitely...

"The Wedden"

Day of the week: Wednesday.  //  "Wednesday's child is full of woe".

Genre: FAIRIES / WOODLAND ANIMALS  //  (Think Redwall, Beatrix Potter, Spiderwick.)

Colour: Violet.

Main premise: Essentially a sweet little forest that has Game of Thrones levels of drama going on.

Notes:

  • Sin: Gluttony I guess.
  • Element: Magic... yes that's an element... definitely...
